According to statistics released by INC (International Nut and Dried Fruit Council), world pistachio production over a 10-year period is as follows.
According to the chart above, the production and consumption of this product has been on the rise over the past 10 years owing to the increasing awareness of communities about the nutritional and medicinal value of this product, resulting in a boom in the world trade of pistachio. Of the total world pistachio production (771,494 tons), almost 49% is exported and the rest is consumed in the pistachio producing countries.
The largest global producers of pistachios include the United States, Iran, Turkey, Syria, Afghanistan, Spain, Italy, and Greece. The total amount of pistachio production in the world is reported to be 771,494 tons. Some of the world’s largest pistachio growers have a low share in the world trade of pistachios, and pistachios produced in those countries are mainly aimed at domestic consumption because of the high per capita consumption of pistachios. Global competition in the pistachio market is between the three main producers (Iran, the USA, and Turkey), and other producers have low shares in the world pistachio market. Iran has the highest area under pistachio cultivation in the world (approximately 420,000 hectares of pistachio orchards). Turkey has the second highest cultivated area of pistachio orchards.
According to the most recent statistics (2018-2019), the total export volume of pistachio has been 381,972 tons worth $ 3,016,843,000, 344,480 tons of which were in-shell pistachio worth $ 2,540,341,000 and the remaining 37,492 tons were shelled pistachio worth $ 476,502,000. A five-year study has indicated that Iran and the United States, each having 35% share of the total world pistachio trade, are the market leaders. These two countries are followed by China (15%), Germany (3%), the Netherlands (3%), and other countries (9%).
The largest global pistachio importers in 2017-2018 include China (117,836 tons), Vietnam (69,925 tons), and Germany (41,619 tons). As can be seen, all three major global importers of pistachio are actively present in the export market of this product and carry a high volume of imports for re-export and presence in the world pistachio market. Other global pistachio importers include Belgium, the UAE, Spain, India, the Netherlands, Italy, and Turkey.
Having unique climatic conditions and diversity and the highest area under pistachio cultivation and genetic diversity in the world, Iran produces high-quality and desirable pistachios in the global market. High protein and fat content are the distinctive characteristics of Iranian pistachio.
